Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Network-weathermap .network Weathermap up to 0.97. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the file editor.php. The manipulation of the argument mapname with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
Directory traversal vulnerability in editor.php in Network Weathermap 0.97c and earlier allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in the mapname parameter in a show_config action.
The weakness was presented 06/05/2014 (Website). The advisory is available at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-3739 since 06/03/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
A public exploit has been developed by Anthony Dubuissez and been published before and not just after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 359 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
