Details
A vulnerability has been found in Apache MyFaces and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the component JavaServer Faces. The manipulation of the argument ln with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple directory traversal vulnerabilities in MyFaces JavaServer Faces (JSF) in Apache MyFaces Core 2.0.x before 2.0.12 and 2.1.x before 2.1.6 allow remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in the (1) ln parameter to faces/javax.faces.resource/web.xml or (2) the PATH_INFO to faces/javax.faces.resource/.
The weakness was published 06/19/2014 by Paul (Website). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-4367 since 11/04/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k.
