A vulnerability has been found in Linux Foundation cups-filters up to 1.0.28 (Printing Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function process_browse_data of the component Filters. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The process_browse_data function in utils/cups-browsed.c in cups-browsed in cups-filters before 1.0.53 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read and application crash) via crafted packet data.
The weakness was disclosed 06/22/2014 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at bzr.linuxfoundation.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-4337 since 06/19/2014. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78840 (RHEL 7 : cups-filters (RHSA-2014:1795)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122845 (CentOS Security Update for cups-filters (CESA-2014:1795)).
Upgrading to version 1.0.29 eliminates this vulnerability.
