D-Bus up to 1.2.18 denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in D-Bus up to 1.2.18. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality. Executing a manipulation can lead to denial of service. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2014-3477. No exploit is available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in D-Bus up to 1.2.18. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

The dbus-daemon in D-Bus 1.2.x through 1.4.x, 1.6.x before 1.6.20, and 1.8.x before 1.8.4, sends an AccessDenied error to the service instead of a client when the client is prohibited from accessing the service, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (initialization failure and exit) or possibly conduct a side-channel attack via a D-Bus message to an inactive service.

The weakness was published 07/01/2014 as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-3477 since 05/14/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 76425 (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS / 13.10 / 14.04 LTS : dbus vulnerabilities (USN-2275-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123094 (Fedora Security Update for mingw-dbus (FEDORA-2014-17595)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93760), Tenable (76425), SecurityFocus (BID 67986†), Secunia (SA59611†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-45170†). Similar entries are available at VDB-70401 and VDB-70400. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
