A vulnerability was found in Samsung Printer 20121030 (Printing Software). It has been declared as critical. The Samsung printer firmware before 20121031 has a hardcoded read-write SNMP community, which makes it easier for remote attackers to obtain administrative access via an SNMP request.
The weakness was disclosed 11/26/2012 by Neil Smith as VU#281284 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. The vendor was not involved in the public release. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-4964 since 09/17/2012. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be applying a restrictive firewalling. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Samsung and Dell have stated that models released after October 31, 2012 are not affected by this vulnerability.
