Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Moodle 2.7 (Learning Management Software). This affects the function get_description in the library lib/classes/event/user_login_failed.php. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-79. The product does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes user-controllable input before it is placed in output that is used as a web page that is served to other users. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the get_description function in lib/classes/event/user_login_failed.php in Moodle 2.7.x before 2.7.1 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via a crafted username that is improperly handled during the logging of an invalid login attempt.
The weakness was released 07/29/2014 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.moodle.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-3549 since 05/14/2014. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
By approaching the search of inurl:lib/classes/event/user_login_failed.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 13018 (Moodle Multiple Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerabilities (MSA-14-0030) and (MSA-14-0031)).
Upgrading to version 2.7 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.moodle.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.
