Details
A vulnerability has been found in IPython Notebook up to 1.1.0 (Programming Language Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component WebSocket. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
IPython Notebook 0.12 through 1.x before 1.2 does not validate the origin of websocket requests, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by leveraging knowledge of the kernel id and a crafted page.
The weakness was published 08/07/2014 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-3429 since 05/07/2014. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
