Apache HTTP Server up to 1.3.32 mod_proxy Content-Length heap-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Apache HTTP Server up to 1.3.32 (Web Server) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component mod_proxy. The manipulation of the argument Content-Length with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Heap-based buffer overflow in proxy_util.c for mod_proxy in Apache 1.3.25 to 1.3.31 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (process crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a negative Content-Length HTTP header field, which causes a large amount of data to be copied.

The weakness was released 06/10/2004 by Georgi Guninski (Website). The advisory is available at guninski.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-0492 since 05/27/2004. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is possible to download the exploit at guninski.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14527 (GLSA-200406-16 : Apache 1.3: Buffer overflow in mod_proxy), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86688 (Sun Solaris Apache Web Server Multiple Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at marc.theaimsgroup.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 2580. In this case the pattern Content-Length|3A| is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 1597.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (16387), Tenable (14527), SecurityFocus (BID 10508†), OSVDB (6839†) and Secunia (SA11841†). Additional details are provided at securityfocus.com. Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-1630, VDB-20195 and VDB-21601.
