A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Oracle MySQL Server up to 5.5.19 (Database Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component SELECT Command Handler. correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
Oracle MySQL 5.1.67 and earlier and 5.5.29 and earlier, and MariaDB 5.5.28a and possibly other versions, allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (mysqld crash) via a SELECT command with an UpdateXML command containing XML with a large number of unique, nested elements.
The weakness was released 12/01/2012 by kingcope as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is available at seclists.org. The vendor was not involved in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-5614 since 10/24/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by kingcope (kingcope) and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69746 (Amazon Linux AMI : mysql55 (ALAS-2013-187)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350560 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for mysql51: ALAS-2013-186).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
