Details
A vulnerability has been found in KDE kdelibs and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component Access Restriction. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
KDE kdelibs before 4.14 and kauth before 5.1 does not properly use D-Bus for communication with a polkit authority, which allows local users to bypass intended access restrictions by leveraging a PolkitUnixProcess PolkitSubject race condition via a (1) setuid process or (2) pkexec process, related to CVE-2013-4288 and "PID reuse race conditions."
The weakness was presented 08/19/2014 by Sebastian Krahmer as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at quickgit.kde.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-5033 since 07/22/2014. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77937 (Fedora 20 : akonadi-1.13.0-2.fc20 / amor-4.14.1-1.fc20 / analitza-4.14.1-1.fc20 / ark-4.14.1-1.fc20 / etc (2014-11448)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167115 (OpenSuSE Security Update for kdelibs4 (openSUSE-SU-2014:0981-1)).
Upgrading to version 4.10.97 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at quickgit.kde.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (77937), SecurityFocus (BID 68771†), Secunia (SA60385†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-45737†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
