The manipulation of the argument file with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. Directory traversal vulnerability in force-download.php in the Download Shortcode plugin 0.2.3 and earlier for WordPress allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in the file parameter.

The weakness was disclosed 09/03/2014 by Christian Galeone (Website). The advisory is shared at wordpress.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-5465 since 08/26/2014. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
