A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 (Web Browser). This issue affects some unknown processing in the library mshtml.dll. The manipulation with the input value href=::%7b leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability.
The issue has been introduced in 03/22/2001. The weakness was presented 06/14/2004 by Rafel Ivgi (The Insider) (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.netsys.com. The attack may be initiated remotely. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.
The exploit is available at lists.netsys.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1180 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be establishing an alternative product.
