BEA WebLogic Server and WebLogic Express 6.1, 7.0, and 8.1, when using Remote Method Invocation (RMI) over Internet Inter-ORB Protocol (IIOP), does not properly handle when multiple logins for different users coming from the same client, which could cause an "unexpected user identity" to be used in an RMI call.
The weakness was published 06/16/2004 with BEA Systems, Inc. (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at dev2dev.bea.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2004-2696 since 10/06/2007. The attack can be launched remotely. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1552 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 87195 (Oracle WebLogic Server Java RMI Incorrect Session Inheritance Vulnerability (BEA04-62.00)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at e-docs.bea.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
