The kernel in Cisco Native Unix (CNU) on Cisco Unified IP Phone 7900 series devices (aka TNP phones) with software before 9.3.1-ES10 does not properly validate unspecified system calls, which allows attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory overwrite) via a crafted binary.
The weakness was shared 12/12/2012 by Ang Cui as confirmed changelog entry (Website). The advisory is available at cisco.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-5445 since 10/17/2012. The exploitation appears to be difficult. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70096 (Cisco Unified IP Phones Privilege Escalation (cisco-sa-20130109-uipphone)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CISCO. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 43255 (Cisco Unified IP Phone Local Kernel System Call Input Validation Vulnerability (cisco-sa-20130109-uipphone)).
Upgrading to version 9.3(1)ES10 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
