Details
A vulnerability was found in VMware View up to 5.1.0 and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component Tunnel-Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
Multiple directory traversal vulnerabilities in the (1) View Connection Server and (2) View Security Server in VMware View 4.x before 4.6.2 and 5.x before 5.1.2 allow remote attackers to read arbitrary files via unspecified vectors.
The bug was discovered 09/26/2012. The weakness was presented 12/13/2012 by r@b13$ with Digital Defense as VMSA-2012-0017 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at vmware.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-5978 since 11/21/2012. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
After before and not just, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 87 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 63685 (VMware View Server Directory Traversal Vulnerability (VMSA-2012-0017)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120733 (VMware View Connection Server and View Security Server Directory Traversal Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 5.1.2 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at my.vmware.com. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at vmware.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
