The IMAP-over-SSL implementation in getmail 4.44.0 does not verify that the server hostname matches a domain name in the subject s Common Name (CN) field of the X.509 certificate, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof IMAP servers and obtain sensitive information via a crafted certificate from a recognized Certification Authority.

The weakness was disclosed 10/07/2014 by mancha (Website). The advisory is shared for download at debian.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-7274 since 10/01/2014. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79805 (Debian DSA-3091-1 : getmail4 - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
