EMC Avamar up to 6.1 Temporary Cache File /var/avamar/f_cache.dat access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in EMC Avamar up to 6.1 (Backup Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the file /var/avamar/f_cache.dat of the component Temporary Cache File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-264. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

EMC Avamar Client 4.x, 5.x, and 6.x on HP-UX and Mac OS X, and the EMC Avamar plugin 4.x, 5.x, and 6.x for Oracle, uses world-writable permissions for cache directories, which allows local users to gain privileges via an unspecified symlink attack.

The weakness was shared 12/19/2012 as EMC Avamar: World writable cache files as not defined mailinglist post (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The public release happened without involvement of EMC. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-2291 since 04/19/2012. An attack has to be approached locally. The successful exploitation requires a single authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

A public exploit has been developed in Shell-Skript and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k.

Upgrading to version 7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Will maybe be patched in mid-2013 since EMC does not patch security issues.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (80751), SecurityFocus (BID 57005†), OSVDB (88530†), Secunia (SA51926†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1028021†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
