Details
A vulnerability was found in Evan Spiegel Snapchat on iOS (iOS App Software) (affected version unknown). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the file Snapchat/tmp of the component Media Cache. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The entire allure of Snapchat is that a photo or video sent through the service completely disappears after a few seconds; it's even quickly deleted off of the company's servers. And ist ephemeral nature means it’s great for sending silly and unflattering images or videos of yourself that you'd otherwise never send.
The weakness was published 12/28/2012 by Katie Notopoulos with BuzzFeed as How Anybody Can Secretly Save Your Snapchat Videos Forever as not defined article (Website). The advisory is shared at buzzfeed.com. The public release happened without involvement of Evan Spiegel. The exploitation appears to be difficult. An attack has to be approached locally. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue. When Katie Notopoulos asked Snapchat founder Evan Spiegel if Snapchat is aware of this exploit and plans on fixing it, he said, "The people who most enjoy using Snapchat are those who embrace the spirit and intent of the service. There will always be ways to reverse engineer technology products - but that spoils the fun!"
A public exploit has been developed by Katie Notopoulos and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at buzzfeed.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
