Adobe Acrobat Reader up to 11.0.0 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Adobe Acrobat Reader up to 11.0.0 (Document Reader Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Heap-based buffer overflow in the XSLT engine in Adobe Reader and Acrobat 9.x before 9.5.3, 10.x before 10.1.5, and 11.x before 11.0.1 allows attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a PDF file containing an XSL file that triggers memory corruption when the lang function processes XML data with a crafted node-set.

The weakness was released 01/08/2013 by Nicolas Gregoire (Alexander) with iDefense Labs VCP as APSB13-02 as confirmed posting (Website). The advisory is shared at adobe.com. The public release was coordinated with Adobe. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-1530 since 03/08/2012. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74987 (openSUSE Security Update : acroread (openSUSE-SU-2013:0363-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166692 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for Acrobat Reader (SUSE-SU-2013:0044-1)).

Upgrading to version 11.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (81046), Tenable (74987), SecurityFocus (BID 57155†), OSVDB (88970†) and Secunia (SA51791†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-7263, VDB-7264, VDB-7262 and VDB-7265. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
