A vulnerability was found in Adobe Acrobat Reader up to 11.0.0 (Document Reader Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality. Heap-based buffer overflow in the XSLT engine in Adobe Reader and Acrobat 9.x before 9.5.3, 10.x before 10.1.5, and 11.x before 11.0.1 allows attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a PDF file containing an XSL file that triggers memory corruption when the lang function processes XML data with a crafted node-set.
The weakness was released 01/08/2013 by Nicolas Gregoire (Alexander) with iDefense Labs VCP as APSB13-02 as confirmed posting (Website). The advisory is shared at adobe.com. The public release was coordinated with Adobe. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-1530 since 03/08/2012. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74987 (openSUSE Security Update : acroread (openSUSE-SU-2013:0363-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166692 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for Acrobat Reader (SUSE-SU-2013:0044-1)).
Upgrading to version 11.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
