A vulnerability was found in IBM Lotus Domino 5.0.12/6.5.2 (Groupware Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component URI Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Argument injection vulnerability in IBM Lotus Notes 6.0.3 and 6.5 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a notes: URI that uses a UNC network share pathname to provide an alternate notes.ini configuration file to notes.exe.

The bug was discovered 06/23/2004. The weakness was disclosed 06/23/2004 by Jouko Pynnonen with iDEFENSE (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at idefense.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2004-0480 since 05/18/2004. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90140 (IBM Lotus Notes URI Handler Remote Code Execution Vulnerability).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ibm.com. A possible mitigation has been published 4 hours after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 30740.
