Summary
A vulnerability has been found in python-gnupg 0.3.5 and classified as critical. The affected element is the function shell_quote. Performing a manipulation of the argument $( results in input validation.
This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-1927. No exploit is available.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in python-gnupg 0.3.5 (Programming Language Software). This affects the function shell_quote. The manipulation of the argument $( with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The shell_quote function in python-gnupg 0.3.5 does not properly quote strings, which allows context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code via shell metacharacters in unspecified vectors, as demonstrated using "$(" command-substitution sequences, a different vulnerability than CVE-2014-1928. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2013-7323.
The weakness was published 10/25/2014 by Florian Weimer with Red Hat as 98 (Website). The advisory is shared at code.google.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-1927 since 02/09/2014. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74313 (Debian DSA-2946-1 : python-gnupg - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
