Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in libproxy 0.3.1 (Firewall Software). Affected is the function print_proxies. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Format string vulnerability in the print_proxies function in bin/proxy.c in libproxy 0.3.1 might allow context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via format string specifiers in a proxy name, as demonstrated using the http_proxy environment variable or a PAC file.
The weakness was disclosed 10/27/2014 as tps://c (Website). The advisory is shared for download at code.google.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-5580 since 10/24/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65180 (Fedora 17 : libproxy-0.4.11-1.fc17 (2012-20092)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (80340), Tenable (65180), SecurityFocus (BID 56712†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-38168†). The entries VDB-58199, VDB-62874, VDB-62579 and VDB-66066 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
