The (1) DOMConverter, (2) JDOMConverter, (3) DOM4JConverter, and (4) XOMConverter functions in Direct Web Remoting (DWR) through 2.0.10 and 3.x through 3.0.RC2 allow remote attackers to read arbitrary files via DOM data containing an XML external entity declaration in conjunction with an entity reference, related to an XML External Entity (XXE) issue.
The weakness was released 11/23/2014 by Takeshi Terada with Mitsui Bussan Secure Directions (Website). The advisory is shared at jvndb.jvn.jp. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-5325 since 08/18/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
