A vulnerability has been found in Moodle (Learning Management Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing in the library mod/forum/externallib.php of the component Web Service. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-264. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. mod/forum/externallib.php in Moodle 2.6.x before 2.6.6 and 2.7.x before 2.7.3 does not verify group permissions, which allows remote authenticated users to access a forum via the forum_get_discussions web service.

The weakness was disclosed 11/24/2014 by SkOd (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at moodle.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-7834 since 10/03/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

By approaching the search of inurl:mod/forum/externallib.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 13071 (Moodle Multiple Security Vulnerabilities(MSA-14-0036 - MSA-14-0048)).

Upgrading to version 2.5.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
