A vulnerability was found in Creative Minds CM Download Manager up to 2.0.1 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function create_function in the library lib/controllers/CmdownloadController.php. The alterSearchQuery function in lib/controllers/CmdownloadController.php in the CreativeMinds CM Downloads Manager plugin before 2.0.4 for WordPress allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary PHP code via the CMDsearch parameter to cmdownloads/, which is processed by the PHP create_function function.
The weakness was released 12/05/2014 (Website). The advisory is shared at downloadsmanager.cminds.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-8877 since 11/14/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by Phi Ngoc Le and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 13 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:lib/controllers/CmdownloadController.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 13078 (WordPress CM Download Manager Plugin Remote PHP Code Execution Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 2.0.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
