A vulnerability was found in PCRE Perl-compatible Regular Expression Library up to 8.36 (Software Library) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality. Heap-based buffer overflow in PCRE 8.36 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or have other unspecified impact via a crafted regular expression, related to an assertion that allows zero repeats.
The weakness was released 12/16/2014 by Michele Spagnuolo as Bug 1166147 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-8964 since 11/18/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation.
