Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Ettercap 0.8.1 (Packet Analyzer Software). Affected is the function dissector_TN3270 of the component Dissector. The manipulation of the argument size with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Integer underflow in Ettercap 0.8.1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds write) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a small (1) size variable value in the dissector_dhcp function in dissectors/ec_dhcp.c, (2) length value to the dissector_gg function in dissectors/ec_gg.c, or (3) string length to the get_decode_len function in ec_utils.c or a request without a (4) username or (5) password to the dissector_TN3270 function in dissectors/ec_TN3270.c.
The weakness was released 12/19/2014 by Nick Sampanis (Website). The advisory is available at obrela.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-9376 since 12/11/2014. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Nick Sampanis and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80340 (Fedora 21 : ettercap-0.8.1-2.fc21 (2014-17090)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123460 (Fedora Security Update for ettercap (FEDORA-2015-4009)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (99315), Exploit-DB (35580), Tenable (80340), SecurityFocus (BID 71696†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-48023†).
