Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 through 11 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted web site, aka "Internet Explorer Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 03/05/2008. The weakness was released 03/10/2015 by Arthur Gerkis with Zero Day Initiative as MS15-018 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-1624 since 02/17/2015. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2561 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81733 (MS15-018: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (3032359)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100227 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS15-018)).
Applying the patch MS15-018 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19226.
