A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Windows up to Vista (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component Adobe Font Driver. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The weakness was disclosed 03/10/2015 by Mateusz Jurczyk with Google Project Zero as MS15-021 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-0093 since 11/18/2014. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/15/2022). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81736 (MS15-021: Vulnerabilities in Adobe Font Driver Could Allow Remote Code Execution (3032323)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91027 (Microsoft Windows Adobe Font Driver Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS15-021)).
Applying the patch MS15-021 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19553.
