The weakness was presented 03/10/2015 by James Forshaw with Google Project Zero as MS15-025 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-0073 since 11/18/2014. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81739 (MS15-025: Vulnerabilities in Windows Kernel Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (3038680)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91034 (Microsoft Windows Kernel Elevation of Privilege Vulnerabilities (MS15-025)).
Applying the patch MS15-025 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
