OpenSSL 0.9.8 Hostname TLS Extension memory leak

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in OpenSSL 0.9.8 (Network Encryption Software). This affects an unknown functionality of the component Hostname TLS Extension. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality.

The issue has been introduced in 07/05/2005. The weakness was shared 03/16/2015 as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-5146 since 03/16/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3541 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81996 (SuSE 11.3 Security Update : OpenSSL (SAT Patch Number 10481)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167688 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for OpenSSL (SUSE-SU-2015:0545-2)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (101582), Tenable (81996), SecurityFocus (BID 73121†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-49097†). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
