A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in OpenSSL 0.9.8/1.0.0/1.0.1/1.0.2 (Network Encryption Software). Affected is the function ASN1_TYPE_cmp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-17. This is going to have an impact on availability.
The issue has been introduced in 07/05/2005. The weakness was released 03/19/2015 by Stephen Henson as secadv_20150319.txt as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at openssl.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-0286 since 11/18/2014. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 0.9.8zf, 1.0.0r, 1.0.1m or 1.0.2a eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19915.
