Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in tcpdump up to 4.7.1 (Packet Analyzer Software). This issue affects an unknown function of the component Ethernet Printer Module. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The osi_print_cksum function in print-isoclns.c in the ethernet printer in tcpdump before 4.7.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read and crash) via a crafted (1) length, (2) offset, or (3) base pointer checksum value.
The weakness was released 03/09/2015 as Bug 1201797 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-2154 since 02/28/2015. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82159 (Debian DLA-174-1 : tcpdump security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350145 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for tcpdump: ALAS-2015-557).
