Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in D-Bus up to 1.6.28. This issue affects an unknown part of the component Service. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
D-Bus 1.4.x through 1.6.x before 1.6.30, 1.8.x before 1.8.16, and 1.9.x before 1.9.10 does not validate the source of ActivationFailure signals, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (activation failure error returned) by leveraging a race condition involving sending an ActivationFailure signal before systemd responds.
The weakness was shared 02/13/2015 (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-0245 since 11/18/2014. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81687 (GLSA-201503-02 : D-Bus: Denial of Service), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124841 (Solaris 11.3 Support Repository Update (SRU) 6.5.0 Missing).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
