Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Phusion Passenger up to 4.0.37. This affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. This is going to have an impact on integrity. The summary by CVE is:
Phusion Passenger before 4.0.37 allows local users to write to certain files and directories via a symlink attack on (1) control_process.pid or a (2) generation-* file.
The weakness was released 02/19/2015 by Jakub Wilk (Website). The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-1831 since 01/30/2014. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81153 (Fedora 20 : rubygem-passenger-4.0.53-3.fc20 (2015-1151)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123302 (Fedora Security Update for rubygem-passenger (FEDORA-2015-1151)).
Upgrading to version 4.0.36 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (90827), Tenable (81153), SecurityFocus (BID 65207†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-49877†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-74242. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
