Details
A vulnerability has been found in FFmpeg up to 2.1.4 (Multimedia Processing Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function seg_write_packet of the file libavformat/segment.c of the component Memory Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The seg_write_packet function in libavformat/segment.c in ffmpeg 2.1.4 and earlier does not free the correct memory location, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service ("invalid memory handler") and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted video that triggers a use after free.
The weakness was released 02/27/2015 as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is available at seclists.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-9676 since 02/12/2015. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
