A vulnerability was found in Linux Foundation Xen up to 2.6.23 (Virtualization Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function xen_failsafe_callback. The xen_failsafe_callback function in Xen for the Linux kernel 2.6.23 and other versions, when running a 32-bit PVOPS guest, allows local users to cause a denial of service (guest crash) by triggering an iret fault, leading to use of an incorrect stack pointer and stack corruption.
The weakness was presented 01/16/2013 by Andrew Cooper as XSA-40 as not defined changelog entry (Website). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-0190 since 12/06/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69713 (Amazon Linux AMI : kernel / nvidia (ALAS-2013-154)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121101 (CentOS Security Update for Kernel (CESA-2013:0496)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
