Details
A vulnerability was found in Webgate Embedded Standard Protocol Sdk (version now known) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function ConnectEx3 in the library WESPCONFIGLib.UserItem of the component Protocol. The manipulation of the argument second with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple buffer overflows in WebGate Embedded Standard Protocol (WESP) SDK allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors to the (1) LoadImage or (2) LoadImageEx function in the WESPMonitor.WESPMonitorCtrl.1 control, (3) ChangePassword function in the WESPCONFIGLib.UserItem control, Connect function in the (4) WESPSerialPort.WESPSerialPortCtrl.1 or (5) WESPPLAYBACKLib.WESPPlaybackCtrl control, or (6) AddID function in the WESPCONFIGLib.IDList control or a (7) long string to the second argument to the ConnectEx3 function in the WESPPLAYBACKLib.WESPPlaybackCtrl control.
The weakness was released 03/09/2015 by rgod (Website). The advisory is shared at zerodayinitiative.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-2097 since 02/26/2015. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Praveen Darshanam and been published 3 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept.
