FreeBSD 10.1 bsdinstall information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in FreeBSD 10.1 (Operating System). This affects an unknown code block of the component bsdinstall. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality.

The weakness was disclosed 04/07/2015 by Pierre Kim as FreeBSD-SA-15:08.bsdinstall as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at packetstormsecurity.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-1415 since 01/27/2015. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:

The GEOM ELI class, or geli(8) implements encryption on GEOM providers which supports various cryptographic encryption and authentication methods as well as hardware acceleration. Each geli(8) provider has two key slots, and each slot holds a copy of its master key encrypted by a keyfile and/or a passphrase chosen by the system administrator.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 92887 (FreeBSD : FreeBSD -- Insecure default GELI keyfile permissions (0b65f297-600a-11e6-a6c3-14dae9d210b8)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

It is possible to mitigate the problem by applying the configuration setting . A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

due to the nature of this issue, there is no way to fix this issue for already installed systems without human intervention. System administrators are advised to assume that the keyfile have already been leaked and a new keyfile is necessary. (...) The system administrator can create a new keyfile with the correct permissions, and change the key slot that holds the master key encrypted with the old keyfile.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (102111), Tenable (92887) and SecurityTracker (ID 1032042†). The entry VDB-74668 is pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
