Details
A vulnerability has been found in Apple MacOS X 10.8.5/10.9.5/10.10/10.10.1/10.10.2 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component ATS. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
fontd in Apple Type Services (ATS) in Apple OS X before 10.10.3 allows local users to gain privileges via unspecified vectors, a different vulnerability than CVE-2015-1131, CVE-2015-1132, CVE-2015-1133, and CVE-2015-1134.
The weakness was presented 04/08/2015 by Ian Beer (lokihardt@ASRT) with Google Project Zero as HT204659 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-1135 since 01/16/2015. An attack has to be approached locally. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:
A local user may be able to execute arbitrary code with system privileges
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82699 (Mac OS X 10.10.x < 10.10.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities (FREAK)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123515 (Apple Mac OS X v10.10.3 and Security Update 2015-004 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-04-08-2)).
Upgrading to version 10.10.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (102158), Tenable (82699), SecurityFocus (BID 73982†), SecurityTracker (ID 1032048†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-49441†).
