Apple MacOS X up to 10.10.2 Kernel input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apple MacOS X up to 10.10.2 (Operating System) and classified as very critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component Kernel. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The kernel in Apple iOS before 8.3, Apple OS X before 10.10.3, and Apple TV before 7.2 does not properly handle TCP headers, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to cause a denial of service via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was disclosed 04/08/2015 by Andrey Khudyakov and Maxim Zhuravlev with Kaspersky Lab as HT204659 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-1102 since 01/16/2015. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 12/01/2024). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82712 (Apple TV < 7.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123515 (Apple Mac OS X v10.10.3 and Security Update 2015-004 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-04-08-2)).

Upgrading to version 10.10.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (82712), SecurityFocus (BID 73176†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1032048†). The entries VDB-74026, VDB-74028, VDB-74029 and VDB-74030 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
