Apple MacOS X up to 10.10.2 LaunchServices type confusion

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple MacOS X up to 10.10.2 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component LaunchServices. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a type confusion vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-843. The product allocates or initializes a resource such as a pointer, object, or variable using one type, but it later accesses that resource using a type that is incompatible with the original type. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

LaunchServices in Apple OS X before 10.10.3 allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted localized string, related to a "type confusion" issue.

The weakness was presented 04/08/2015 by Ole Andre Vadla Ravnas (lokihardt@ASRT) with Apple as HT204659 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-1143. Local access is required to approach this attack. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82699 (Mac OS X 10.10.x < 10.10.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities (FREAK)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123515 (Apple Mac OS X v10.10.3 and Security Update 2015-004 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-04-08-2)).

Upgrading to version 10.10.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
