Details
A vulnerability was found in GNU Mailman up to 2.1.19 (Mail Client Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown functionality of the component Alias Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Directory traversal vulnerability in GNU Mailman before 2.1.20, when not using a static alias, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in a list name.
The weakness was released 04/13/2015 by Jakub Wilk (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mail.python.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-2775 since 03/27/2015. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83196 (Fedora 21 : mailman-2.1.20-1.fc21 (2015-5216)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171791 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for mailman (SUSE-SU-2018:4296-1)).
Upgrading to version 2.1.20 eliminates this vulnerability.
