A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 11 (Web Browser). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function CAutoRange::GetRangeTopLeft of the component ASLR. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 through 11 allows remote attackers to bypass the ASLR protection mechanism via a crafted web site, aka "Internet Explorer ASLR Bypass Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 03/22/2001. The weakness was disclosed 04/14/2015 by AbdulAziz Hariri with Zero Day Initiative as MS15-032 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-1661 since 02/17/2015. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5136 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82770 (MS15-032: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (3038314)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100229 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS15-032)).
Applying the patch MS15-032 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19332.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (82770), SecurityFocus (BID 74006†), SecurityTracker (ID 1032108†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-49591†).
