IBM WebSphere Application Server (WAS) 6.1 through 6.1.0.47, 7.0 before 7.0.0.39, 8.0 before 8.0.0.11, and 8.5 before 8.5.5.6 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by sending crafted instructions in a management-port session.
The weakness was disclosed 05/05/2015 as swg21883573 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at www-304.ibm.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-1920 since 02/19/2015. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83290 (IBM WebSphere Application Server Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124146 (IBM WebSphere Application Server Remote Command Execution Vulnerability (swg21883573)).
Applying the patch 7.0.0.39/8.0.0.11/8.5.5.6 is able to eliminate this problem.
