Oracle Java up to 7 Update 11 Deployment memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Oracle Java up to 7 Update 11 and classified as critical. This affects an unknown function of the component Deployment. Performing a manipulation results in memory corruption. This vulnerability is identified as CVE-2012-1541. Additionally, an exploit exists. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Oracle Java up to 7 Update 11 (Programming Language Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown part of the component Deployment. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Unspecified vulnerability in the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) component in Oracle Java SE 7 through Update 11 and 6 through Update 38 allows remote attackers to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability via unknown vectors related to Deployment, a different vulnerability than other CVEs listed in the February 2013 CPU. NOTE: the previous information is from the February 2013 CPU. Oracle has not commented on claims from a third party that the issue is due to an interaction error in between the JRE plug-in for WebKit-based browsers and the Javascript engine, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by modifying DOM nodes that contain applet elements in a way that triggers an incorrect reference count and a use after free.

The weakness was released 02/01/2013 with Sun Microsystems Inc. as Java CPU Feb 2013 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at oracle.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-1541 since 12/07/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70744 (IBM Notes 8.5.x < 8.5.3 FP5 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120832 (Oracle Java SE Critical Patch Update - February 2013).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (81955), Tenable (70744), SecurityFocus (BID 57246†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-38235†). Further details are available at krebsonsecurity.com. Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-7313, VDB-7551, VDB-7560 and VDB-7533.
