ownCloud up to 5.0.18/6.0.6/7.0.4 Blacklist Filter UTF-8 Encoding injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in ownCloud up to 5.0.18/6.0.6/7.0.4 (Cloud Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component Blacklist Filter. The manipulation as part of a UTF-8 Encoding leads to a injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-74. The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

ownCloud Server before 5.0.19, 6.x before 6.0.7, and 7.x before 7.0.5 allows remote authenticated users to bypass the file blacklist and upload arbitrary files via a file path with UTF-8 encoding, as demonstrated by uploading a .htaccess file.

The weakness was disclosed 05/08/2015 by Lukas Reschke (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at owncloud.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-3013 since 04/08/2015. The attack may be initiated remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1055 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83193 (Debian DSA-3244-1 : owncloud - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175391 (Debian Security Update for owncloud (DSA 3244-1)).

Upgrading to version 5.0.19, 6.0.7 or 7.0.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (83193), SecurityFocus (BID 74451†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-55405†). The entries VDB-75225 and VDB-75226 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
