A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 8/9/10/11 (Web Browser). Affected is an unknown function of the component VBScript Engine. VBScript.dll in the Microsoft VBScript 5.6 through 5.8 engine, as used in Internet Explorer 8 through 11 and other products, allows remote attackers to bypass the ASLR protection mechanism via a crafted web site, aka "VBScript ASLR Bypass."
The issue has been introduced in 03/05/2008. The weakness was released 05/12/2015 by SkyLined with Zero Day Initiative as MS15-043 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-1684 since 02/17/2015. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1592 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2624 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83364 (MS15-053: Vulnerabilities in JScript and VBScript Scripting Engines Could Allow Security Feature Bypass (3057263)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100232 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS15-043)).
Applying the patch MS15-043 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19580.
