A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in PowerDNS Recursor up to 3.7.2 (Domain Name Software). Affected is an unknown function of the component Recursive Query Handler. The label decompression functionality in PowerDNS Recursor 3.5.x, 3.6.x before 3.6.3, and 3.7.x before 3.7.2 and Authoritative (Auth) Server 3.2.x, 3.3.x before 3.3.2, and 3.4.x before 3.4.4 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption or crash) via a request with a name that refers to itself.
The weakness was disclosed 05/18/2015 by Aki Tuomi (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securitytracker.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-1868 since 02/17/2015. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83222 (Fedora 20 : pdns-recursor-3.7.2-1.fc20 (2015-7079)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175462 (Debian Security Update for pdns (DSA 3306-1)).
Upgrading to version 3.6.3 or 3.7.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19892.
