Details
A vulnerability was found in Wireshark up to 1.12.4 (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function logcat_dump_text of the file wiretap/logcat.c of the component Android Logcat File Parser. The manipulation with the input value \0 leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
The logcat_dump_text function in wiretap/logcat.c in the Android Logcat file parser in Wireshark 1.12.x before 1.12.5 does not properly handle a lack of \0 termination, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read and application crash) via a crafted message in a packet, a different vulnerability than CVE-2015-3815.
The weakness was released 05/26/2015 (Website). The advisory is shared at code.wireshark.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-3906 since 05/12/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
